Have you ever watched your favorite food commercial and wondered why your coffee is not the same one in the clip? That’s because it’s a cup of soy sauce! Soy sauce gives off a richer color than normal coffee. for that extra touch, food artists use soap bubbles to give off the “Freshly poured look.” Lots of fast food chains use different (and usually cheaper) substances to create the illusion of the perfect coffee. Lets take ice cream for example, most ice cream will melt under studio lights, so they use instant mashed potatoes! Surprisingly, it looks really realistic, and its less than half the cost! Here are some more food commercial tricks:

  • Most sauces are prepared with wax (to give the perfect consistency)
  • Fruit are sprayed with hairspray or deodorant (to keep a shinier appearance)
  • Glue instead of Milk in cereal (to keep cereal from sinking to the bottom)

I showed everyone in my journalism class a picture of a McDonald’s quarter pounder. The right side was the fake burger, while the left side (the not-as-good-looking one) was a normal burger. Out of 21 people, 8 said the left side looked better (because they didn’t like the pickles on the other one) and 13 said the right side looked better. So next time you want any commercial food, remember its not going to look as good as the original!
