Captain Marvel Movie Review

Lola Halverson, Journalist

Taking place in the 1990s, Captain Marvel, a Kree warrior, continues to find herself tangled up in an intergalactic war between her nation and the villainous Skrulls. Throughout the film, we see parts of her other life on earth, where she was a U.S. Air Force pilot named Carol Danvers. With help of unlikely friends and creatures along the way, she tries to reveal secrets from her past, while uncovering her extraordinary superpowers in order to end the war against the Skrulls.

Captain Marvel got a 7.2/10 from IMDb, a 64% on Metacritic, and a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though the movie might not have gotten the best ratings, it taught many important lessons, as the following experts state;

“The second major Hollywood movie to feature a female superhero at its center, but it’s a savvier and more high-flying fantasy than “Wonder Woman,” because it’s the origin story as head game,” -Owen Gleiberman Variety

“This superhero flick is basic but still engrossing, enthralling, and rewarding on many levels, just one of which is seeing Marvel’s first female superhero get her own movie.” -Tara McNamara Common Sense Media

“As a Nick Fury buddy comedy, it’s fun. As a feminist fable it’s essential. This takes a while to really get going, but when Carol Danvers takes off she is unstoppable,” –Empire

While the film received a low score, many reviewers loved the strong female lead, and the fun and humor written into the script. Therefore, I believe this movie should have been given an 8/10. While it was hard to follow sometimes, i enjoyed the plot and how the characters personalities developed over-time.
