Some people find it utterly disgusting, but some people find it satisfying and amazing to watch. For all of you who find yourself triggered by these videos, don’t be embarrassed, you’re not alone. There is a scientific reason that these videos interest you.

For all of you who love these videos, you have probably heard of Sandra Lee, or Dr. Pimple Popper. She has over three million subscribers, and 891 videos. Guess how many views those hundreds of videos have? Over 1.5 billion views. But why are we so intrigued by these very odd videos? The simple answer, is they make us physically feel good.

Popping your own pimples releases dopamine, the “feel good” chemical. Neuroscientist and assistant professor, said, “There’s a cycle of anxiety or arousal before the act and a sense of relief after.” In other words, when you pop a pimple, you feel a mix of physical relief, the pressure release, and you also feel a mental sense of relief.

Many people get the same sensations from watching pimple popping videos. Dr. Pimple Popper said, “I think watching popping is similar to seeing a scary movie or riding a roller coaster for some,” she said. “You get a rush of euphoria and excitement.” Basically, watching pimple popping videos makes you feel good, because the build up of tension when the pimple is about to be popped is very dramatic, then once it pops, your stress is gone and then you feel relieved. That releases the “feel good” chemical, dopamine.

It has also been said that the reason for these sensations could be biological. People get a weird sensation when watching people pick things out of their bodies. Senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, Diana Fleischman, said, “Humans have evolved to groom each other to avoid these ectoparasites [flies, lice, tics, etc].” There is a big element of disgust when it comes to pimples. The act of “cleansing” yourself, or “relieving” yourself of the gross thing, makes you feel relieved and accomplished.

In the end, it is in our nature that we enjoy these videos, so don’t feel bad! You are just like the rest of people who love these videos.
